The First Battle of Manassas was fought as part of the American Civil War in July 1861, following which the Second Battle of Manassas was fought in August 1862 near present-day Manassas. Post the war, the crossroads located on the battlefield turned into a small town known today as the city of Manassas. It replaced Brentsville in 1962 and became the county seat of Prince William County.
Manassas was integrated as a city in 1975, and was separated from the Prince William County as per the Virginia law. As of the 2016 census, the total population of the city is recorded at 41,483.
