McKinney has consistently ranked amongst the fastest growing cities in the United States over the past 20 years. For example, its population in 1990 was barely 21,823. This had swollen to 55,000 by the year 2000 and it has continued to grow ever since.

The local school system is superb, with a number of excellent rated public schools covering all age ranges.
The city overall has a very friendly, family orientated feel. Law Enforcement maintains high visibility patrols and crime is exceptionally low. There are numerous parks and opens spaces, many malls and shopping complexes and movie theatres.
Nightlife is somewhat lacking – there are no clubs and not many bars for a city of this size.

Commuter City
The city is within easy driving distance of the far larger cities of Plano and, particularly Dallas, which lies about 30 miles to the south. A large proportion of city residents therefore commute to these cities for work.
Industries that provide services within the city itself are therefore dominant. Retail, at 14% of all jobs is the largest employing single industry, with healthcare (13%) and education (9%) right behind, with Food Service providing 6%.
As a growing city, it should be no surprise that Real Estate related jobs (2.5%) and construction (5%) are quite strong.
Torchmark, the financial services company, is headquartered here employing some 1,300. The financial sector as a whole provides some 8% of total jobs.
There is also some strong local industry with several major industrial plants & factories. Raytheon, the defense contractor, is the largest with a factory complex employing some 2,600 people. Manufacturing in fact provides roughly 10% of all jobs in the city.
