The present-day land of Meridian belonged to the Choctaw Indians before 1830, after which point a treaty was signed with the U.S. government to take over the territory — The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. Richard McLemore was among the first settlers to obtain land in the area and he began to donate his share of the property to new settlers, to promote development.
Meridian began to flourish and prosper due to the railroad tracks being established and other businesses continued to develop — this era was regarded as the Golden Age.
