Jobs in Mountain View, California, United States

Location and Population. Mountain View is a high-tech suburban city in the Silicon Valley in Santa Clara Country, at the southern end of San Francisco Bay in close proximity to San Jose. Its estimated population of 80,447 in 2016 was 40 percent foreign-born, and was comprised mainly of Non-Hispanic Whites (48%), with Non-Hispanic Asians (26%) and Hispanics (20%) also occupying large shares. Median household income is almost twice the statewide average, having risen significantly since 2008. Unemployment and poverty are both low.

Origins. Mountain View was founded in 1864 as a stagecoach stop on the route between San Francisco and San Jose. It incorporated in 1902, relying mainly on agriculture as the primary industry until after WWII. The presence of the Navy’s nearby Moffet Field Complex, and the development of the aerospace and electronics industries between 1950 and 1960, resulted in growth of the population from around 6,500 to over 30,000 in just ten years. This was made possible by conversion of agricultural land into industrial and housing complexes.

Economy. Silicon Valley originated in Mountain View, with the development of silicon semiconductor devices by the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, which was founded there in 1956. Today, Mountain View is home to many high tech companies and is one of the major Silicon Valley cities. Google has by far the largest presence. In 1990, the new city manager developed a relationship with the company which led to its obtaining a long-term lease from the city. Google developed the initial site for its corporate headquarters on vacant farmland within the city limits, and has since acquired other space to expand its campuses.  Several other high-tech companies followed suit, and the revenues from the leases enabled the city to develop Castro Street and Shoreline Park. The tech industry is more subject to boom or bust economic cycles than some other industries, but Mountain View has proved to be resilient.

Character. Mountain View is an expensive, high-tech town with a highly-educated and internationally diverse population. Most of the city is a long strip mall with little sense of community and not much nightlife or live music. On the other hand, although air quality can be poor, it has a lovely climate (not too hot or too cool), many parks and a peaceful, calm way of life. Castro Street is quite lively, with a European-like atmosphere and lots of quality shops and restaurants, and Santa Cruz, San Jose, and San Francisco are easily accessible by both public and private transport.
