Muncie receives its name from the Munsee family, who were from the Eastern tribe popularly known as the Delaware Indians. After acquiring the land in 1818, the United States government allowed settlers to move into the region and set up their homes. Among the settlers, was a merchant — Golden Gilbert who opened the very first trading post in 1823, in current Muncie area.
The city began to flourish and soon the “Indianapolis and Bellefontaine” railroad was introduced in 1852. Muncie was officially recognized as a city in 1865 and John Brady went on to become the city’s first mayor.
Post the civil war, Muncie began to attract industrial development due to the discovery of “Natural Gas” in the surrounding region. Muncie went on to develop commercially due to the gas-boom period and many manufacturing businesses were introduced to the city.
