Many indigenous tribes made their home in New Bern prior to the European invasion in 1710, the settlers were mostly German and Swiss by descent. The settlers were primarily led by 3 explorers — John Lawson, Christoph von Graffenried, and Franz Louis Michel. They named the settlement “Bern” after Christoph’s hometown in Switzerland.
New Bern played an important role in the 19th century during the Civil War, when the Union Army rescued over 10,000 enslaved prisoners and built camps for them in the settlement to house many of the refugees. Much of the refugees — who were freed after the “Emancipation Proclamation” offered by Abraham Lincoln — went on to occupy New Bern and develop the city.
Lumber industries were the primary occupation of New Bern during the early part of the 20th century. Presently, the city is home to many businesses and offshore corporations including restaurants, cultural centers, and art galleries.
