Jobs in Niagara Falls, New York, United States
Niagara Falls is a city located in Niagara County in the US State of New York. The city boasts a population of around 51,000 inhabitants and takes it names from the famous waterfalls that lie adjacent to the city.
You Might Not Fall in Love with Niagara Falls
Despite sitting directly opposite one of the wonders of the world, Niagara Falls really cannot be considered a thriving city. See the stats below where the exceptionally high crime rate and low property values paint a picture of a city in decline – the population has in fact fallen from around 100,000 in the 1960’s.
The city is essentially a byword for postindustrial decay, with a horrific downtown built in a poorly planned 1960’s regeneration attempt now lying half empty and itself decaying.
On the plus side, housing and living costs are very low – which frankly they need to be, as the city’s median income of only $31,560 is around 40% below the national average. 1 in 5 people in the city live below the poverty line.
60% of the population receives government assistance in some form.
- Median Age: 39.2
- Median Household Income: $31,560
- Median Property Value: $67,400
- Cost of Living: 34% lower than state average, 21% lower than national average
- Unemployment Rate: 7%
- Crime Rate: 115% higher than national average
Not Surprisingly a Heavily Tourist Based Industry
Despite its problems, the city still attracts a significant amount of tourists, all to see the eponymous waterfalls. Around 10 million a year in fact, which contributes heavily to the local economy.
The problem is that these tourist dollars are not well harvested. You need only look across the falls themselves to the city of Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. Whilst the two cities share a name, that is where the similarity ends. The Canadian version boasts a skyline of modern, well maintained hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and other well-deployed service and tourist industries.
The US version lacks for this central, uniting vision. The jobs market is still of course dominated by tourism, with 16% of all jobs in the retail sector, along with 10% in food service and accommodation. Healthcare related provides 17% ad Educational services 9%.
