North Port, located in Sarasota County, is situated on the western side of the Floridian peninsula between Tampa and Fort Myers. The city was originally named North Port Charlotte, but was renamed North Port in 1974.
The city was originally developed by a development corporation, as a result the city is now formed by many large residential subdivisions. Due to its location in Florida, North Port has a tropical climate with over 250 sunny days a year, excessive humidity, and an increased level of rainfall.
The city has experienced immense growth since 2000. After almost tripling in size, North Port currently has a population of around 64,000 people. The youth of North Port are served by the Charlotte County School District, which manages over eight elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.

The Heron Creek Golf Course, a semi-private, course, offers a championship 27-hole golf course, as well as five tennis courts, a gym area, and a teaching or practice area. The clubhouse hosts a wide variety of events and offers well-rated dining services. The Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club, formerly Bobcat Trail, is a public course which features both an extensive course, teaching facilities, and dining options.
The city of North Port has a growing cultural scene. The North Port Art Center offers a variety of temporary art shows, adult art classes, and youth art classes. Additionally, North Port Performing Arts Center presents various symphony, concert band, and chorale performances.
