One of the most notable sights in Norwalk is the D.D Johnston-Hargitt House Museum, or locally known simply as ‘Hargitt House’. The Johnston family is considered to be one of the first families in Norwalk, with Darius David (D.D) Johnston establishing the city’s first school system. The Hargitt House, built in 1881, features family heirlooms and community memorabilia. The House comes alive by way of free tours given by docents, organized by Friends of the Hargitt House.
Norwalk also has another museum, the Sproul Museum, home of Gilbert and Anna Sproul, and was built in 1870. The House used to be the venue for all the first townhall meetings, and it also features Sproul family heirlooms. However, the Museum is currently closed for renovations.
The City Museums are presently offering opportunities for those who enjoy telling stories and talking to people, because they can be hired as docents, in charge of leading tours, requiring a three-month commitment.
