Ottawa-Gatineau, otherwise known as the National Capital region or Canada’s Capital Region, encompasses Ottawa, the capital of Canada, and Gatineau, its French speaking neighbor located in western Quebec.
Ottawa-Gatineau region has low unemployment rates, and both cities saw an increase in employment rates during 2017, especially in the finance, insurance, real estate, construction, and retail industries. According to the Conference Board of Canada, Ottawa-Gatineau’s GDP will experience a growth of 2.3% by the end of this year. By far the biggest employers in the region are the federal government, high-tech industry, and health sector.
Both Ottawa and Gatineau are home to government offices that employ thousands of people from the region. Places to look for government jobs in the capital are multiple office towers surrounding the Parliament Hill and the Supreme Court in Downtown, while major government employers in Gatineau include Public Works and Government Services Canada, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, Transportation Safety Board of Canada, and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
Highly in-demand jobs are those in HR sector, IT, and public administration. Keep in mind though that you will be required to speak both fluent English and French to secure one of the federal jobs in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
Silicon Valley North
It’s not for nothing that Ottawa has earned the nickname “Silicon Valley North”: there are around 1,700 high-tech companies employing more than 70,000 people in and around the capital.
Major employers are telecommunications companies such as Mitel and Nortel, and software development firms the likes of Corel. A number of other tech leaders (Google, Nokia, 3M, BlackBerry, Adobe Systems, Bell Canada, IBM and Hewlett-Packard) have regional offices in Ottawa.
With more and more local companies working overtime to complete with global giants, the tech sector will continue to grow in the next few years, and it is predicted that the industry will add 10,000 new jobs by 2019.
The health sector in Ottawa-Gatineau region employs more than 18,000 people. There are four active general hospitals located in the Ottawa area (Queensway-Carleton Hospital, The Ottawa Hospital, Montfort Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario), and numerous other hospital facilities.
Lab technicians, health economists, nurses, health and safety officers, medical receptionists, and mental health specialists are in particular demand in this region.
