In the 17th century, some of the early pioneers that moved into the current area of Roanoke were settlers from eastern Virginia. The name “Roanoke” is said to have come from the Algonquian word for “shell money”. The Norfolk and Western Railway was completed in 1882 bringing a rapid economic growth to the city. Due to the presence of the railroad, American Viscose established a rayon plant in Southeast Roanoke in 1917, this created a lot of job opportunity for the growing community.
