Santa Rosa is a city of around 174,000 inhabitants located within Sonoma County in the state of California. Its nearest major metropolitan areas is San Francesco – the city actually is within the San Francisco Bay Area, and is the fifth largest city in this area.

In 2002, the city was listed second on the Forbes magazine list of Best Places for Business and Careers. By 2007 however, the city had slid to 185th on the same list. The sharp drop was blamed on an increase in the business costs within the city, largely as a result of increased housing costs.
Today the city’s job market remains buoyant, and relatively diverse. The jobs market leans toward health provision, with several large-scale medical facilities as well as large offices for medical insurance providers located here.
Manufacturing is also present here, with Amy’s Kitchen, the frozen food maker, maintaining a large plant as well as several brewing companies.
Tourism and related services is a large employer here, as are the vast swathes of vineyards that surround the urban center of the city.

Santa Rosa is a relatively safe city, with violent crime rates lower than the California average – although higher then the national average.
As befits a city that relies somewhat on the tourist dollar, there are a range of activities and recreations in the city that are just as well suited for residents to enjoy as for visitors.
There are several museums and galleries and a lot of city ground is given over to local government managed recreational space. This includes the Prince Memorial Greenway, which is a developed cycle path and several parks of varying size.
The historic downtown is home to a number of bars, shops and restaurants making it somewhat of a hub for visitors and locals alike. Even though, broadly speaking, it something of a suburban town, there is a bit more going on here than in similar sized suburban cities in California.
