Saskatoon, the largest city in the prairie province of Saskatchewan in Western Canada, has one of the most robust economies in the country. The city’s economy is mainly driven by potash, oil and wheat industries, which has earned Saskatoon the nickname of “POW City” (potash, oil, wheat). PotashCorp, the largest potash manufacturer in the world, is headquartered in Saskatoon.

Saskatoon is also home to Cameco, the world’s largest publicly traded uranium company and one of the top ten largest employers in the area.

The city has also become an important player in the digital media industry over the past few years, and is now home to a large number of tech-companies that continue to attract young talent from all over the continent.

Potash, Oil, and Wheat

Besides PotashCrop, other large employers in the potash, oil, and wheat industry include K+S Potash Canada,  Procon Mining & Tunnelling Ltd. , Canadian Light Source, Maple Leaf Foods, CNH Global (New Holland Agriculture), and Cargill.

While PotashCrop is currently not hiring, other potash companies like K+S Potash and Procon Mining are now looking for Distributed Controls System Specialist, Health, Safety and Environment Specialist, Inventory Analyst, Mobile Equipment Operator Health, Technical Document Administrator, and General Manager.

Canadian Light Source, the country’s leader in the study of heavy cold oil, is an important job source for chemical engineers, energy policy experts, risk consultants, microbiology graduates, and geology majors.

Job openings in the agriculture and food industry include HACCP specialist, agriculture equipment service technician, financial analyst, sanitation supervisor, production supervisor, millwright, and marketing specialist.

Uranium Mining

Uranium giant Cameco operettas several mines in the province, including Cigar Lake, the highest grade uranium mine in the world.

Besides mining jobs, the company employs a broad range of professionals, including engineers, geologists, technologist, scientists, operators, as well as a large number of trades, such as electricians and mechanics.

Cameco’s job openings include tubing supervisor, community liaison, finishing operator, maintenance planner, maintenance supervisor, pilger mill operator, administrative assistant, safety specialist, and SAP basis administrator.

Tech Sector

According to Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA), the technology industry in Saskatoon is undergoing an unprecedented boom. At the moment there are 65 tech businesses in the city, employing over 8,000 people.

Companies such as game developer Noodlecake Studios, sales and marketing solutions company Vendasta Technologies, electronic design automation software company Solido Design Automation, and digital agency Zu are now looking for software developers, technical applications specialists, data analysts, and marketing specialists.
