Schenectady is a city located in Schenectady County in the US state of New York, where it serves as the county seat. The city has a population of 67,000 inhabitants.
It lies to the east of the state, and the nearest large city is Albany, located around 15 miles to the southeast.
A Diverse City
As something of a 19th century industrial powerhouse, the city attracted large numbers of immigrants and African Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries, giving rise to a city with a number of historically and culturally diverse neighborhoods.
The city is home to a number of theatres (movie and traditional, a museum, a light opera company and quite a number of locations included on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city maintains many parks and recreational facilities, including the magnificently landscaped Central Park and a municipal golf course on the edge of the city.
Education is split across 20 sites – 16 elementary, 3 middle and 1high school.
Commerce, restaurants and bars are centered on a vibrant main street that boasts over a mile of excellent eating and shopping opportunities.

A Recovering Jobs Market
Like much of the area, this once powerful industrial town was crushed by corporate and industrial restructuring that occurred toward the tail end of the 20th century. Whilst the local economy is re-building, showing 3% growth in 2016 and 4% in 2015 for example, it is not the center of manufacturing it used to be – though around 6% of jobs in the city are in this sector.
General Electric have established a renewable energy center which has contributed around 6000 jobs to the local economy, making it the single largest employer. Ellis Medical facility (3,400) and the local school district (2,700) are the next biggest.
Golub Corporation, a national Supermarket operator, is based in the city and employs around 3,000 at its headquarters here.
The largest single sector is healthcare, with 19% of the jobs market, followed by retail at 14%, education at 10% and food service (8%). Administrative roles (5%) and professional and tech services (4%), public admin (8%) and finance/insurance(4%) are the white collar sectors in town.
