Sierra Vista is a city located in Cochise County in the state of Arizona. With a population of just under 44,000 people, it is very much the commercial and cultural hub of the county.
Sierra Vista by the way translates from the original Spanish to mean “Mountain Range View” – which should give you a good idea of the topography, location and views available from this pretty city.
A Natural Life in Sierra Vista
The city is surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. In addition to the aforementioned mountain views, the city is also surrounded by picturesque and canyons. Of particular note is nearby Ramsey Canyon Preserve. This area and surrounding canyons are extremely popular with birdwatchers, who flock in their hundreds to the city and have given it the unofficial nickname of Hummingbird Capital of the United States.
There are also conservation areas, national memorials and maintained canyon lakes all working together to preserve the local beauty.
The town is well supplied with a range of shops and three large supermarkets and a large weekly farmers market, all befitting its status as the commercial centre for the local area.
A number of cultural events run in the town throughout the year, with several popular and well attended festivals such as the Cochise Cowboy Poetry and Music gathering, the festival of the Southwest and the Southwest Wings Festival (note – this is a bird watching festival, not a celebration of Buffalo Wings).
The median household income is $43,393 and the median house price in town is $151,000 with a cost of living calculated at 6.3% lower than the national average.
A Military City
The largest local employment sector is the government, owing to the large US Army base Fort Huachuca located in the city. The Fort is the US Army headquarters for Strategic Communications Command. It is not the ordinary, everyday army base then – but an extremely high tech center of excellence specializing in, amongst other things, cyber security and unmanned aircraft training.
The base is the primary employer in town and, due to it’s high tech nature, means that for a city this size there are a remarkable amount of professional, scientific and technical service jobs available here. The high tech sector comprises around 10% of the total workforce, making it one of the largest employment sectors in the city.
Away from this, tourism and general retail trade are another large part of the workforce, comprising a further 10%.
Public Administration (local government) is the largest single sector here at about 25% of the workforce, befitting a city that essentially exists to service the army base and its large and often temporary population.
