The most populous city in South Dakota, Sioux Falls sits in Minnehaha County. Estimated to be one of the United States fastest growing cities Sioux Falls has a population of over 174,300. Established in 1856 Sioux Falls lies on the banks of the Big Sioux River. The city enjoys easy access to both Interstate 90 and Interstate 29. Rolling hills surround the city.
Initially Sioux City’s economy was centered on quarrying and agriculture. However over the last few decades the Sioux Falls economy has diversified to become more service based. Today the city is a hub for financial services, health care and the retail sector.
A Service Economy
The absence of any state corporate income tax has led to Sioux Falls becoming the base for many financial companies. These are all major employers in the city. Amongst the most prominent of these companies are Wells Fargo and Citigroup. Away from the finance sector a number of other companies such as Lewis Drug, Sunshine Foods and Raven Industries are also based in Sioux Falls employing a number of people.
Thanks to its size and good transport links to the rest of South Dakota Sioux Falls has become a significant regional health care hub. Four major hospitals are based in the city. Of these two, Sanford Health and Avera Health, are amongst the most important employers in the city. The presence of these four respected institutions means that there are a great number of employment opportunities available, not only in the skilled fields of health care and treatment but also in research and administration.
A Retail And Cultural Hub
As a result of its prominence in the region Sioux Falls is an important hub for both shopping and dining. The Empire Mall occupies a prime retail zone in the city and is home to a number of large national chain stores and restaurants. Offering a more intimate shopping experience the central downtown area is home to the “Bridges” shopping centre, which houses a number of independent boutiques and stores.
Sioux Falls is also plays host to a number of festivals and events every year. These include the ever evolving Sculpture Walk, which takes place every summer and “First Fridays”. This is a series of concerts, which take place on the first Friday of every month and is supported by many of the downtown area’s businesses. Another popular event is the Downtown Riverfest, which aims to celebrate the beauty of the Big Sioux.
Other popular attractions in Sioux Falls include The Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum, the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial and a replica of Michelangelo’s David, which sits in Fawick Park.
Sioux Falls is a thriving city with an increasingly diverse economy. The hub for medical care in the region as well as shopping and cultural activities means that it is a popular place to both live and work.
