In 1763, the governor of New Hampshire — Benning Wentworth granted a charter to establish the township of Burlington to Samuel Willis. Once the land was settled and was integrated as the city of Burlington, the remaining land bordering the area came to be known as “South Burlington”. Both the cities were primary into agriculture, although towards the start of the 19th century, South Burlington moved heavily towards dairy farming.
By the turn of the 20th century, South Burlington had plenty of privately owned farms that primarily grew pumpkins and berries along with dairy farming. The produce was sold at local Farmer’s markets and the city began to move towards construction and sales during the late 1950s.
Presently, South Burlington has a modest population count of 18,971 in 2016, according to the census.
