Located in the north east of the state Stillwater sits in the intersection if US 177 and State Highway 51, which means that it enjoys excellent transport links. The county seat of Payne County Stillwater is the tenth largest city in Oklahoma. It is also the principal city of the Stillwater Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Stillwater is also home to the main campus of Oklahoma State University as well as a branch of Northern Oklahoma College, Meridian Technology centre and the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. As a result Stillwater has a diverse economy with a foundation in aerospace, agribusiness, biotechnology, optoelectronics, printing, publishing, software and standard manufacturing.
A Diverse Economy
As Stillwater is home to its main campus it is no surprise that Oklahoma State University is the city’s largest employer. As well as in the administration and teaching sectors the presence of the University has also led to a number of research and scientific jobs. There are also many employment opportunities to be found in the small businesses and companies that exist to support the university and its students.
Aside from education Stillwater is home to a diverse mix of business and industry. Stillwater Medical Centre is the second largest employer in the city. The presence of such a large operation means that a number of other businesses exist to support it and consequently it indirectly supports a number of other jobs. Companies such as Ocena Dental Headquarters base themselves in Stillwater as a result.

A Lively Social Scene
Sillwater is known as the home of red dirt, a mixture of folk, county, blue and rock. Many notable musicians such as Garth Brooks and All American Rejects launched their careers here. The Red Dirt Music Festival is held in Stillwater every March. In addition to this Stillwater hosts several performing arts series, including performances at the City of Stillwater Community Center, the Town and Gown Community Theater. OSU’s Allied Arts holds performances in the Seretean Center and the Jerry L. Davis Studio Theatre.
Stillwater is also home to a number of annual festivals and community events held throughout the year such as the Boomer Blast fireworks display, the Stillwater Farmers Market and the Festival of Lights. Residents also benefit from the many events and activities hosted by Oklahoma State University.
The Strip on Washington Street features small shops, restaurants and live music. It is adjacent to Oklahoma State University where University Avenue and Washington Street intersect. A few blocks away is Campus Corner which features unique shops and restaurants, including the original home of Hideaway Pizza, Oklahoma’s oldest pizzeria.
Stillwater may well be one of Oklahoma’s best-kept secrets. A relatively low cost of living combined with an incredibly active social scene, thanks in part to the presence of Oklahoma State University have helped to create a young and vibrant community. It also has many opportunities for employment in a number of fields including research, education, healthcare and agriculture. It is no surprise to find that Stillwater was ranked one of the top 100 places to live in 2010 according to CNN Money Magazine.
