Tracy is a city located in San Joaquin County in the US state of California. With a population of 83,000 it is the second largest city in the county, after the county seat Stockton.
An expanding, City with a Tranquil Atmosphere
Initially founded as an agricultural town to take advantage of the superb Californian weather and the city’s location in the sheltered Central Valley. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the city became what it is today, as sprawling residential developments sprang up to meet the surging population of mainly young families looking to escape the high property prices of the Bay Area.
The city offers a relatively laid back tranquil lifestyle despite its rapid growth however. The city has a reputation as being family friendly, whilst also being a little dull.
There is a one theatre, one movie theatre, an outlet center and a small shopping district. The vast majority of property is given over to residential developments.
The city describes itself as great place to, “kick off your shoes, hang up your hat, sit back and relax,” and, frankly, it’s hard to argue with that!
Still, the bright lights of San Francisco are barely an hours drive away.

Fulfilling Careers in Tracy
The title of this section is a pun by the way, as Tracy has developed a thriving new industry in fulfillment centers. Ringed around the outskirts of the town you will find numerous, huge warehouses belonging to Amazon, Costco, Fed-Ex and Crate to just name a few.
They have been drawn here by Tracy’s excellent Interstate links to nearby San Francisco and the port of Oakland, and it is estimated that the various fulfillment centers between them employ around 10,000 people. Not all of these 10,000 live in Tracy however, with many commuting in from nearby towns.
This has created a secondary, service based industry reliant on this large workforce.
Manufacturing, Retail, Warehousing and Transport account for around 35% of the workforce in the city.
Healthcare (9%) and Education (6%) are the next biggest sectors, but the job market here is very much dominated by those fulfillment and distribution warehouses.
