Tulare is a city in Tulare County, California with a current population of over 62,000. The city is part of the fertile San Joaquin Valley and as such, agriculture and dairy farming play an important role in its economy. Tulare got its name from Tulare Lake, which in turn draws its name from “tule” – the Spanish word for reeds. The Southern Pacific Railroad essentially founded the erstwhile town of Tulare in 1872 as prospective railway headquarters in the valley. The town was incorporated as a city 16 years later.
