Prominent for the largest collections of art deco architecture, Tulsa is the second-largest city in the US state of Oklahoma. Historically, the city’s economy has been driven by the energy industry with The United States Oil and Gas Association situated there alongside other renowned large oil companies such as Getty Oil, Skelly Oil, and CITGO, with their headquarters in Tulsa.

After the Great Recession in mid-2009, Tulsa was one of the metropolitan areas that recovered speedily from its negative effects as shown in improvements in the labor market. Tulsa has had a low unemployment rate even falling lower than the national rate in the same period.

Hiring Sectors and Opportunities

As many other workforces in the US, Tulsa occupational groups is classified into 22. However, only 3 major groups take dominance. They are Office and Administrative support, Production and Sales. It is noteworthy that though these main groups are dominant and offer regular job openings, they also belong to the lowest paid set with average annual earnings ranging from $31,970 – $36,610. This is considerably low compared to other occupation groups inclusive of jobs related to arts, entertainment, media, sports, and life, physical and social science which present with average annual salaries ranging from $41,160-$77,440.  Legal occupations are the highest paid in the city with average annual salary of $93,040. Job openings in this group often belong to the professional skilled levels requiring some years of experience and highly competitive.

The Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce identified six sectors targeted in gaining employment growth with the effort of the government, they included: Energy, Aerospace, Advanced Manufacturing, Health Care, Professional Services and Transportation Distribution and Logistics. However, Energy, Aerospace, and Health Care were placed in high priority with the impact being felt in these sectors in regard to jobs creation and growth.  Under this influence, the health sector came out as the greatest in Tulsa in terms of its growth rate and employment opportunities with over 10,000 employed.

There are also opportunities for employment in the Education sector, with Tulsa housing 15 institutions of higher learning including two private universities. The government also provides jobs through The City of Tulsa employment agency.

Low-Skill Jobs, No College Degree Requirement

It can be daunting for low skill individuals to find suitable jobs especially with the dominance of office jobs. However, Tulsa with its ample restaurants and retail businesses create job opportunities for people in this category.
