In the 1860s, Twin Falls was just a barren land due to the geographic location of the area. Several surveyors tried to lead a successful expedition but failed. It wasn’t until 1900, when I.B. Perrine who decided to solve the problem of irrigation by starting his company — The Twin Falls Land and Water Company. The idea was to build an irrigation canal system and raise finances from potential investors.
Perrine was successful, and by 1905, the Milner Dam was completed along with its canals. This was the first-time irrigation was possible outside the Snake River Canyon area. Perrine is generally accepted as the founder of Twin Falls for his contributions.
Twin Falls gained a lot of media attention in September 1974, when daredevil Evel Knievel announced his attempts to cross the Snake River Canyon on a specially modified rocket cycle. The attempt failed, but there was a monument built in honor of Evel Knievel near the Perrine Bridge, it was built in 1985 and was attended by Knievel himself.

The city utilizes a “council-manager” type of government with a seven-member council heading it. Although the mayor is the official representative of the city, the day-to-day proceedings are judged by a represented city manager.
