Utica is a city located in Oneida County in the US state of New York. With a population of around 62,000 it is the tenth most populous city in the state.
The closest cities to Utica are Albany, 90 miles to the Northwest and Syracuse, 45 miles to the east.
A Diverse “Rust Belt” City
The economic woes of the city in the 1980’s and 1990’s continue to affect Utica today. The closing of major industrial plants hit the city hard, and as discussed below have not been widely replaced though recovery is ongoing.
Subsequently, poverty is a real issue here, with around 30% of the population defined as living below the poverty line. This has meant that the general cost of living is very low in the city, which has encouraged continued migration of a wide range of immigrants, nationalities and cultures to the city.
Utica is therefore wonderfully diverse, with at least 15 languages spoken in the city, and a number of neighborhoods reflecting the highly mixed ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the citizens.
The city has a superb culinary scene, with foods of many cultures present. Everything from the traditional local dish Utica Greens to Dutch, German and Bosnian inspired fare is found here.
The city is home to a superb Museum of Natural History, an excellent main street of many stores, restaurants and bars and at least 10 city maintained parks and outdoor recreational facilities.

Post Industrial Decline Job Market
Like many similar sized cities, Utica has suffered at the hands of globalization and industrial decline. A number of large employers closed or relocated in the latter part of 20th century – including the loss of all of the textile mills, formally one of the largest employing sectors in town.
The largest private employer is ConMed Corp, who manufactures surgical equipment and the Matt Brewing Company, the 15th largest brewer in the US.
Faxton St.Luke’s Healthcare is a healthcare system providing services to the citizens of Utica and the surrounding Mohawk Valley, and is a major employer in town, with a workforce of 3,000 people.
Healthcare is in fact the largest employer in the city, with 19% of all jobs in this sector. Retail (15%), education (10%) and food service (8%) come next.
Manufacturing is around 9% of all jobs, with professional and high tech related at 5% and general admin and office work lies at 4%.
