New business representativeswork for the sales departments of enterprises that market services or manufactured products, or both. The working environment is highly competitive. Holders of this positionare typically expected to implement their employer’s customer relationshipmarketing strategy (CRM).  The objectives of a CRM are:

  • to build client relationships with new customers
  • to maintain customer loyalty by cultivating long-term relationships with established customers
  • to build brand value
  • to streamline corporate performance

The new business representative is expected to work independently and produce results with little or no supervision. A base salary and benefits are usually provided, but earnings potential depends mainly on commissions from sales.

  • Formulating and implementing an effective business development plan for the assigned territory
  • Maintaining contact with past customers and working to develop repeat sales
  • Identifying potential new business prospects
  • Discussing prospects’ needs, identifyingtheir requirements, and scheduling custom demonstrations
  • Preparing and delivering demonstrations and presenting business solutions to qualified prospects
  • Managing virtual product demonstrations and sales processes
  • Using effective time and territory management techniques to maximize results
  • Forecasting monthly and quarterly sales
  • Documenting daily sales activities
  • Managing sales pipeline effectively
  • Preparingaccurate reports communicating sales activities and results to management
  • Performing any other tasks necessary to drive sales revenue

To become a new business representative, a person must:

  • Possess a college degree or equivalent sales experience
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of successful business-to-business (B2B) sales experience with a strong emphasis on acquiring new customers
  • Demonstrate documented success in achieving and exceeding assigned quotas
