How to Become a Registered Nurse

There are various routes that you can take to become a registered nurse. The minimum requirements call for a nursing diploma, an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN).

There are also minimum entry requirements for respective programs depending on your institution of choice.

Education

There are various routes that you can take to become a registered nurse. The minimum requirements call for a nursing diploma, an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

A nursing diploma is the quickest route into the field. However, this only prepares you for entry-level positions. The course runs for one to two years in a hospital-based program.

At a college-level, an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) give you more employment opportunities. The ADN takes approximately 2 years to complete, while the BSN is a four-year program. The BSN offers a more comprehensive nursing program which will open more doors to work opportunities.

If you are in possession of an ADN or a nursing diploma, you can enroll in a conversion program from RN-to-BSN. This allows you to obtain a BSN over a two-year period.

Students completing a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field can enroll in an accelerated, “second degree” BSN program which allows you to transfer education requirements and complete a BSN qualification in a maximum of two years.

You will also be required to pass an NCLEX-RN exam administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). This is an eligibility test and is the ultimate determinant of receiving your registered nursing license.

Each institution has varying entry requirements for different courses. Some of the standard requirements include:

  • Minimum SAT or ACT scores
  • A GPA score between 2.0 and 3.25
  • 3 years of math subjects, including algebra and geometry
  • 3 years of science subjects, including chemistry and biology
  • Four years of English
  • 2 years of any foreign language

Required Work Experience

Required work experience for various types of registered nurses will depend on the field of interest. Work experience requirements when seeking employment vary and are set out by the employer.
