About The Role: We need a talented and experienced Technical Director, with a proven track record and accountability in inspiring, nurturing and mentoring engineering teams, and delivering market-leading quality and credibility in projects and engagements within a digital product design and development environment. Experience within a fast-paced, highly changeable design and development environment is vital, as is demonstrable empathy for the multiple teams and practitioners that make up dynamic digital product teams. On that basis a fundamental part of the role is fostering an environment where effective and consistent delivery happens through empowering teams of skilled individuals to drive their own projects and initiatives, develop as people and team-players, and deliver the best work of their lives. Potato stresses a progressive, lean and agile delivery culture, so the Technical Director will be a London Studio exemplar and leader for the concepts of self-determining, multi-disciplined product and service teams working in a highly iterative and collaborative manner with clients and partners, and keeping us at the forefront of progressive working practices. The Technical Director will have a vital accountability for contributing to and maintaining a single view of “the way we work” across Design, Engineering and Coaching. Therefore a close collaboration with your direct peers (Commercial Director, Product Design Director, and Product Delivery Director) is critical. About You: Our Technical Director will naturally first and foremost come from a background of having been a highly qualified and experienced developer themselves - with a demonstrable track record in launching complex, scalable and highly secure web products and services. You should also have deep experience and awareness of Mobile and connected device products and services and be intimate and knowledgeable with the trends in emerging interfaces and technology platforms for Voice, AI, VR and MR. A passionate and driven individual, you will lead everything to do with technology delivery - comprising relationship with peers in our client and partner teams, contributing the technology perspective to business development, talent outreach, internal and external thought leadership, training and mentoring approaches, our chosen development platforms, languages, tools and services, and most importantly execution to agreed standards of quality on projects - for the London Studio. Finally we would expect you to have a strong and deeply collaborative relationship with your peers in the other Potato Studios in Bristol and San Francisco, to foster sharing, insights and experience, and consistency of approaches. Required Skills: Demonstrable experience leading a studio/agency from a product development and delivery perspective. Strong understanding in, experience of, and advocate of Lean Startup and Agile foundational frameworks for iterative product development. A strong understanding of the technical/digital landscape, excellent technical knowledge and a thorough understanding of trends in design and technology. Extensive experience building large scale web products, and launching them on scalable web platforms. A working understanding and appreciation of our core platforms and their ecosystems: Python, JavaScript, and the web platform. A deep understanding of modern product development workflows, including version control, release management, continuous integration, test-driven and behaviour-driven development, and monitoring. A high degree of entrepreneurial spirit and be capable of thinking on your feet and being flexible and comfortable with ambiguity and change. Optional Skills: Strong presentation and communication skills. Strong emotional intelligence, empathy and leadership capability. Humility, straightforwardness and high collaboration skills. This will embody our culture and values. Strong desire to share accountability and work as a peer in a collective leadership team structure. Proven ability to build credible, trusting, sustainable relationships at a senior level within organisations. Excellent commercial, entrepreneurial, and strategic skills. Passion for excellence and attention to detail, self-motivated, proactive, enthusiastic and driven with the ability to motivate others. A focus on outcomes. Comfort interfacing between teams (including engineering, designers, strategists, delivery managers and client stakeholders). Demonstrable leadership skills and competencies. Values: Working shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best engineers, designers and product leads in town, we’ll give you the freedom to manage your own work and trust you to get things done. Want to work from home occasionally? Go for it. Need to unwind with a game of Fortnite or some studio dog cuddles? All good. Ultimately, we just want to make sure that you have everything you need to help us deliver the best products possible. You’ll have many opportunities for growth and learning: collaboration within teams, rotation to different products, experimentation on internal tools as well as involvement in our Potato Talks events, mentorship and conferences. Social Description: We're currently on the lookout for a talented Technical Director to join us in our (fast growing) studio in London. So if think you’ve got what it takes to deliver digital products and services that break new ground for some of the biggest brands on the planet, we can’t wait to hear from you Engineering Management Startup Leadership Management Technology Python Training Collaboration Entrepreneurial
