Senior SEO Manager

The Senior SEO Manager is a creative and commercially astute senior manager in the business who manages the SEO program and ensurxes that there is maximum visibility of the business online through the delivery and management of the content and the campaign workflows.

The Senior SEO Manager grows traffic and revenue opportunities through promotion of organic searches across desktop and mobile platforms and provides the initial response to internal enquiries and requests for online activity support. The senior SEO Manager develops the business’s strategies and tactics by working on keyword analyses, search volumes, introduction optimization of new landing pages.

Objectives and Responsibilities of the Senior SEO Manager

Strategy: The Senior SEO Manager spearheads the development of comprehensive online search strategies alongside the SEO Manager. The Senior SEO Manager essentially oversees the execution of the holistic SEO strategy, in regard to keyword selection and utilization, content, site architecture, and link-building.

The Senior SEO Manager plays a major role in the definition of the long-term roadmap for the business’s continued SEO growth in conjunction with senior SEO management. He also ensures that proper tracking is set up on the business’s websites, blogs, and online pages to track not only traffic flow, but ecommerce, conversions, and UX.

Research and Analytics:  The Senior SEO Manager is also responsible for conducting research and providing recommendations to the senior SEO management on crucial points of improvement. This is achieved through the performance of various SEO related analyses such as back-link analysis, optimization, and monitoring the day-to-day performance of the business’s SEO activity efficiency.

At this capacity, the Senior SEO Manager is also charged with the analysis of new SEO trends, hence, keeping the SEO department up to par with the latest market trends and ensuring that the business is not lagging behind of its competition. He is also responsible for determining how these new SEO trends are translated into workable solutions for the business. In his analytical role, the Senior SEO Manager will also employ the use of various SEO tools and platforms, for example, Ahrefs, Moz, Majestic, Screaming Frog, Google Analytics, Conductor, and so forth.

The Senior SEO Manager is also tasked with applying his research and analyses results in identifying of opportunities that will organically grow the business’s search rankings through new approaches and strategies.

Collaborate: The Senior SEO Manager’s position is a collaborative position and, therefore, the Senior SEO Manager teams up with the Content Editing and Content Marketing teams in communicating new SEO trends and recommending keywords for content, hence, ensuring that the business’s pages maintain a high ranking on key search engines and attract as much traffic as possible. The Senior SEO Manager will also collaborate with these teams in order to determine volume, schedule, and makeup of the digital content required by the business within specific time intervals in order to generate a healthy traffic flow.

In his collaborative role, the Senior SEO Manager also supports the Head of SEO and the Director of Search Marketing in brain storming department-wide SEO techniques and changes of algorithms.

Team Management/Building: The Senior SEO Manager also works as team player and, at this capacity, he is charged with managing subordinate SEO personnel and the SEO Manager, who form his SEO team. The Senior SEO Manager takes responsibility for the development and management of the SEO team and, in this capacity, is responsible for overseeing all SEO campaign activities conducted by the team. He therefore, has to take charge and ensure that SEO campaigns are executed in a timely, scalable, and efficient manner by that team.

At this capacity, the Senior SEO Manager functions as the SEO champion within the business by establishing and building strong working relationships even with cross-functional product departments that will drive even offline SEO initiatives.

Other Duties: The Senior SEO Manager also performs other functions as he deems necessary for the proper execution of his duties and other duties as delegated by the Head of SEO, the Director of Search Marketing, the Chief Marketing Officer, or the Employer.

Required Qualifications of the Senior SEO Manager

Education: The Senior SEO Manager must have a bachelor’s (master’s preferred) degree in Marketing, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or any other related field. An equivalent of this educational requirement in working experience is also acceptable.

Experience: A suitable candidate will have a 5 year working experience in an SEO department preferably as a SEO Manager. He will demonstrate proven success in optimizing content for a business’s online pages pulling in more traffic to that business’s pages. The candidate will also need to have developed sound understanding of the technical on-page SEO elements, the role of content, and the importance of links, and have vast experience working with standard tools of SEO, for example, Google Analytics. The Senior SEO Manager must also have amassed vast experience and expertise in keyword research, which will be a major function of the position.

Technical/Analytical Skills: The Senior SEO Manager must be able to demonstrate which on-page factors are important, for example, Meta descriptions and page titles. He will be able to describe which features are available in the Google search engine and other key search engines, and explain link building techniques in relation to this.

He will demonstrate a genuine interest in marketing, content strategy, copywriting, and blogging with a vision for generating leads and web traffic for the business. through the implementation of SEO techniques The Senior SEO Manager will have vast knowledge in HTML, AJAX CSS, WordPress, Flash, Java-script, and other valuable media technologies. In addition to this, the Senior SEO Manager must be extremely proficient in scripting languages such as .php, .aspx, and .jsp.

Communication Skills: A suitable candidate for the position will possess excellent communication skills, both in verbal and written form. These skills will be put to the test in the Senior Manager’s cross-functional interactions and in the management of his team, whose efficiency will be dependent on the conveyance of clear and unambiguous information.

Additionally, the Senior SEO Manager will collaborate with the Content Editing and the Content Marketing teams, whose functions are the creation and tailoring of content for the business. In order to clearly and accurately instruct these teams on the tailoring of the content and the use of keywords, the Senior SEO Manager will require exceptional written and verbal skills.

Finally, the Senior SEO manager has to collaborate with senior SEO management in the formulation of department wide strategies, where he will be required to deliver both verbal and written reports and presentations. He must, therefore, be capable of defending even the most technical aspects of his reports and presentations to this senior management, presenting the information in the simplest and most convincing of ways.

Ms Office/Software: The Senior SEO Manager must be extremely proficient in Ms Word and PowerPoint, tools that he will regularly use in conveying SEO strategies and approaches to the junior SEO Manager, the Content departments, and supporting personnel. He will also apply these tools in the creation of both visually and verbally engaging reports and presentations for the senior SEO management.

On top of this, the Senior SEO Manager must be proficient in the workings of blog site hosts such as WordPress and web analytics softwares and platforms such as Google Analytics, Coremetrics, Omniture, Majestic, Moz, Screaming Frog, etc.

Interpersonal Skills: Certain interpersonal skills are extremely important for a Senior SEO Manager to possess. The candidate must be extremely self-motivated and demonstrate an ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision, show comfort working in a fast-paced environment, be a team player and a team builder, constantly motivating colleagues and junior staff. He must be highly organized, and have a capacity to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at once.

People Skills: Due to the cross-functional nature of the position it is necessary that the Senior SEO Manager also possess strong people skills. He must be an individual who is able to build and maintain strong working relationships with his colleagues and seniors as well as with external partners. This way, he will earn the trust of his juniors, his seniors, and that of the content departments with whom he will work the closest with.
